Conquer Obesity and Depression
Obesity and depression among women of color is at an all time high. Sixty-three percent of African American women are obese and overweight. Sixty percent of African American women suffer from symptoms of depression. Many Psychologists have found that obesity and depression go hand in hand.
Some of the signs of depression that can lead to obesity include, increased appetite, weight gain, excessive sleeping, loss of energy, loss of interest in activities, and loss of sexual appetite. Women of color who experience these symptoms find it difficult to implement a physical exercise routine or establish a healthy diet, which will increase the risk of weight gain.
Incorporating stress management into a weight loss program is the best way to conquer obesity.
Here are some stress management suggestions
(in addition to exercise and a healthy diet):
1. Take time alone - Meditate 5 to 10 minutedaily.
2. Write down your thoughts in a journal.
3. Practice deep breathing exercises.
4. Pamper yourself.
5. Share your thoughts - Confide in someone you trust.
6. Engage in laughter
If you experience symptoms of depression for more than 14 days, please contact your physician and/or seek help from a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

The stress management tips are extremely helpful and I’m going to incorporate them into each day. I think it’s key to pamper yourself, there are so many women that spend there time taking care of there families, that they forgot about themselves.
I finally admitted to myself that I was depressed. I think that this is something that African American women have difficulty with addressing because it challenges the perception of us being “strong and independent”. My doctor put me on medication, now I can deal with the issues related to my depression more effectively. For me, weight was a major factor. I can’t tell you how much better I feel about myself! I have lost ten pounds! I am well on my way to a healthier me!
