Editor’s Note
GIRLFRIENDS has exciting news! Each issue of GIRLFRIENDS will feature a guest editor. I’m happy to accept the honor of being the first guest editor of GIRLFRIENDS HEALTH GUIDE. I’m a Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and a Behavioral Health Consultant in Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL. I will be featured as a “Resident Psychologist” on the GIRLFRIENDS interactive website at www.girlfriendshealthguide.com. I will address many aspects of emotional and psychological wellness among women of color. I will provide insight into conquering obesity and depression through stress management.
This issue of GIRLFRIENDS will address the dilemma of OBESITY. Weighing 20% or more over your ideal body weight is considered obese. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, overweight and obesity rates among minority women are at an all-time high. Among minority women, 78% are overweight while 51% are obese. Research also suggests that obesity may contribute to hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and depression. Medical professionals indicate that overeating, lack of physical activity, and hormonal irregularities are common factors that contribute to obesity. In this issue we will introduce you to Dr. Monica Zatarski who will discuss Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and Pfizer who will describe the conditions associated with Metabolic Syndrome, two hormonal disorders that can contribute to obesity. It is our hope to inform, enlighten and educate you about the dangers and risk factors related to obesity. In addition, we will suggest techniques that will help you in your fight against obesity and other related disorders.
So Let’s Get Going Ladies!! It’s Time To Get Fit, Get Healthy, Get Connected, and become one of our GIRLFRIENDS!
